With over 1,645 attendees, the Era of Hope meeting is recognized as one of the premiere breast cancer research conferences in the United States. This year's meeting highlighted the multidisciplinary and innovative approaches funded by the Department of Defense (DOD) Breast Cancer Research Program (BCRP) in its efforts to eradicate breast cancer.

Meeting Agenda and Proceedings

The Era of Hope meeting provided a forum for a diversity of scientific disciplines - life scientists, clinicians, epidemiologists, mathematicians, chemists, physicists, and more - to come together with breast cancer survivors and advocates to learn about advances against breast cancer made since the Program's inception. It also promoted a venue to challenge status quo and conventional wisdom, share ideas and identify promising, innovative avenues in breast cancer research for the years ahead.

The meeting was organized around three major themes: (1) Understanding Risk - A Different Perspective, (2) Understanding Who Needs Intervention, and (3) Understanding Treatments - Effectively Treating Primary and Metastatic Disease. Plenary sessions focused on emerging issues in breast cancer; other sessions highlighted the BCRP Innovator awardees, and discussed the nature and challenges of innovation in scientific research. Focused symposia sessions spotlighted the research of over 250 BCRP-funded investigators and over 1280 poster presentations were made by the BCRP grantees. Breast cancer survivor participation, a hallmark at all levels of the BCRP and this meeting, was tremendous with over 270 breast cancer survivors from 95 organizations attending, 48 survivors co-chairing or moderating sessions, and 10 survivors presenting.
